Why Are Routine Oil Changes So Important?

Maybe you've brought in your car and have been told that you're due for an oil change, but beyond that, you don't really know why it's important or when it should be done. Motor oil is essentially the lifeblood of any vehicle because it lubricates the many moving parts of the engine and absorbs the heat made from friction. Without oil or with oil that is too old or dirty, your engine would overheat.

So, oil is very important, but when should you have it changed? Keep reading to learn more about the intricacies of oil changes.

As time goes on and you drive your car, the engine oil breaks down and wears out. It becomes dirty and less effective at lubricating the engine and absorbing heat as time progresses, so the goal is to have the oil changed before there is an issue with overheating that could lead to a breakdown or major engine damage.

The common rule of thumb is to bring in your vehicle for an oil change every 3,000 miles, and if you don't know the manufacturer's recommended oil change intervals, it's a good number to aim for. However, with engine technology and oil evolving, it may be possible to get your oil changed every 5,000 to 10,000 miles instead. This information can be usually discovered by consulting your owner's manual.

Within your owner's manual, there is likely two numbers in regard to your recommended oil change interval. One is for normal driving conditions and the other is for severe driving conditions, which is lower. You may be thinking to yourself, I'm not off-roading, track racing, or driving through a blizzard, so my driving must be normal. While that may be true, there are more factors to consider than that.

Severe driving doesn't necessarily mean severe weather, although it includes it, but rather means any conditions that put a severe amount of strain on your engine. Some of these conditions include:

  • Extreme hot or cold weather
  • Stop-and-go driving in heavy traffic
  • Towing a boat or trailer
  • Dusty conditions
  • Driving on steep hill or mountains on a regular basis
